Pageants in West Virginia, from the hollows to the state title
West Virginia is the only state that lies entirely within Appalachia, and mountains shape almost every town. Charleston, the capital, sits on the Kanawha River, Huntington lies on the Ohio River in the west, Morgantown is in the north near Pennsylvania, and Parkersburg, Wheeling and the Eastern Panhandle around Martinsburg each look toward a different neighbor state.
West Virginia University in Morgantown and Marshall University in Huntington bring young people into the state, and healthcare, education, energy and tourism employ many residents. The New River Gorge, ski areas like Snowshoe and the state's many festivals give women plenty of places to be seen, and community titles have a long history in small towns here. Many West Virginians are proud of their mountain heritage, and family and church networks often turn into the strongest group of supporters a candidate can have.
Winding two lane roads mean that even short distances take time. AmericaBeauty West Virginia runs every stage online, so a candidate in a small mountain town competes on equal terms with one in Charleston or Morgantown.
West Virginia cities with a contest stage
West Virginia candidates choose their city at entry. Women from Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg and Wheeling each get a city stage of their own, and those from smaller towns pick Other city in West Virginia and still compete in a city stage.
